Located in the Springfield neighborhood of Newark, Jesse Allen Park spans eight acres and is situated between Avon Avenue and Muhammad Ali Avenue. It is adjacent to key community landmarks like Louise A. Spencer School, the Boys and Girls Club of Newark, and Grace West Manor, a residential tower for seniors.

 

Historical Significance & Legacy:

The park is named after Jesse Allen, a significant figure in Newark's history and a staunch advocate for racial justice. Allen, a community organizer and city council member for the Central Ward, is celebrated for his dedication to building community and promoting racial equality in Newark. His legacy continues to inspire and impact the community, reflected in the park that bears his name.

Renovation & Partnerships:

The comprehensive renovation of Jesse Allen Park was spearheaded by The Trust for Public Land as part of the Parks for People-Newark program. This project brought together multiple stakeholders including the City of Newark, Newark Public Schools, the State of New Jersey, Essex County, The Friends of Jesse Allen Park, the Boys and Girls Club of Newark, the Springfield/Belmont Super Neighborhood Council, and various local partners. The park was revitalized in three phases, starting in 2009.
